Immediately following the end of World War I, amid the collapse of the German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires, bitter fighting broke out in the Baltic region as Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania struggled for their independence, and Red and White Russian armies began their civil war. There were also German forces still active in what had been the northern end of Germany's Eastern Front. This book offers a concise but detailed introduction to this whole theatre of war, focusing on the Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and relevant German and Russian forces, plus Finnish, Danish and Swedish contingents. For each region there is a detailed map as well as meticulous orders-of-battle and insignia charts. Detailed for the first time in the English language, this fascinating book concisely tells the story of the birth of these Baltic nation states.

"The author details the major events and campaigns, but the presentation gets a bit confusing. For those that like uniform and equipment it is fine. If it were better organzied I would give it 5 stars"

Armies of the Baltic Independence Wars 1918&ndash20 Elite Book 227 eBook Nigel Thomas Toomas Boltowsky Johnny Shumate Reviews

  • By 1918, the collapse of the Russian Empire and the defeat of Imperial Germany created an opportunity for the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to fight for their own independence. Their respective national armies were largely improvised. Outside intervention, international volunteers, and the Russian Civil War added to a complicated battle space.

This Osprey Elite Series book attempts, largely successfully, to provide a brief account of the fighting, and to specify the warring factions. Readers are advised to pay close attention to the very short narratives of the various conflicts. The descriptions of uniforms and equipment are backed by the usual good quality color plates and period photographs. This reviewer wishes more than one sketch map had been included. Recommended as a concise introduction to a complicated topic.
